All weekend our team in CA will be reporting from the polo fields of Coachella. Come back often. We’ll have exclusive video, photos and more!

Coming just as musically hard and lyrically fresh as a rock ‘n roll group, there are many hip-hop artists these days that are doing collaborations  or are considered musical inspirations for some of our favorite artists. We are not ashamed to admit that we love hip-hop and are excited to see some of these amazing rappers at Coachella this year, including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Nas[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Wiz Khalifa[/lastfm].

#1: OFWGKTA (or Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All)

There is a lot of hype behind OFWGKTA who the press have been saying are single-handedly taking hip-hop back to pre-mainstream roots. A collective of Los Angeles kids ranging between the ages of 17 and 21, Odd Future (for ease) is comprised of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tyler the Creator[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Earl Sweatshirt[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Hodgy Beats[/lastfm], D[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]omo Genesis[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mike G[/lastfm], Frank Ocean, Left Brain, The Jet Age of Tomorrow, Syd tha Kyd, Jasper Loc and Taco Bennett.

These ten teenage skater kids–who are labeled “horrorcore” much to their dislike–have music critics and fans all over the world repeating with Tyler the Creator induced lyrical tourettes: “The Future is ODD” and “SWAG.” While they may have spurned a huge distaste of  “swag” slang with the older generation, the lyrics of OFWGKTA are smart, emotional, pop-culture infused and deliciously raunchy.

Recently, Tyler the Creator and Hodgy Beats performed for the first time on late-night television for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

NEXT PAGE Wiz Khalifa!

#2: Wiz Khalifa

Despite Pittsburgh hip-hop youngin’ Wiz Khalifa being signed to Warner Brothers Music since 2007 (he moved on to Atlantic Records in 2010), Khalifa went from an underground sensation to a mainstream radio hitmaker after the success of his song “Black and Yellow,” playing a number of music festivals, making magazine covers like XXL and winning MTV’s 2010 Breakthrough MC of the Year from artists like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nicki Mina[/lastfm]j and[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] J.Cole[/lastfm].

Khalifa has worked most notably with artists like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Girl Talk[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Yelawolf[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Wu-Tang Clan[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]A Tribe Called Quest[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rakim[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] KRS-One[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Slick Rick[/lastfm]. Known for his weed advocacy, many of Khalifa’s songs include references to partying, including a single called “On My Level” off his upcoming album, Rolling Papers.

One of the biggest names in hip-hop, Nas was famously in a feud with another musical mogul, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jay-Z[/lastfm], but his personal history is a lot more profound than some inflammatory lyrics towards Hova.

The song talented jazz musician [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Olu Dara[/lastfm], Nas grew up in Brooklyn playing the trumpet, listening to hip-hop, and educating him on the African culture and Islam.  In 1992, MC Serch approached Nas about a hip-hop career and he was subsequently signed to Columbia Records before his first album, 1994’s Illmatic, was released to much critical acclaim. Since then Nas has put out more than eleven albums, including his most recent collaboration with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bob Marley[/lastfm]’s son, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Damian Marley[/lastfm]. Marley and Nas will be performing together at Coachella.

21-year-old Berkley native, Brandon McCarthy or Lil’ B  “The Based God,” is known for his Lil’ Wayne style flow and his massive social media hustling tactics. Performing in the hip-hop world since he was 16-years-old, Lil’ B became most popular during the San Francisco hyphy movement and because he created 155 MySpace pages to promote the over 1500 tracks he has recorded and his 15 mixtapes since 2009, including two featuring [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Soulja Boy[/lastfm].
