Brandy and Monica, now known to some of their fans as “Branica,” are gearing up for an intimate show that will include a talk and a few select songs, to be streamed live online tonight (March 22) from a secret location.
The R&B stalwarts, who recently teamed up for “It Belongs to Me,” explained why tonight’s show will be special.
Monica, an Atlanta native, echoed Brandy’s sentiments. “I’m so happy to be home in the city that raised me, that supports me, that holds me down.”
Their renewed connection serves as a reunion of sorts. Their Grammy-winning 1998 collaboration, “The Boy Is Mine” was released on both singers’ albums. But Monica says that they’ve always been connected and she didn’t understand why “people always say, ‘Now that your back together…a full-fledged group.”
However, Monica does allow that they have come together musically at a time in their lives when they are at similar life stations. “We experience some of the same things now,” she said. “We’re both mothers, there’s common ground.”
While they kept the location and set list under wraps, Brandy did offer some insight into her process.
“I get very quiet 10 minutes before I perform,” Brandy said. “I feed off the energy of the crowd. The more into it the crowd is, the more into it I become. It’s kinda hard to create that hype feeling on your own, You need them to be excited.,” she said. “I’m excited.”
