Macklemore & Ryan Lewis On The Art Of “Thrift Shop”-ping
“Thrift Shop” is the hottest single off Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ independently produced, recorded, and released album, The Heist– and it’s one of the biggest surprises to hit the charts in a while. The deal hunting anthem has climbed to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was just recently certified Platinum with over a million copies sold.
The video for the track, which features the Pacific Northwesterners’ humor and eclectic style (vintage sweaters, fur coats, onesie pajamas, and a cameo appearance by a DeLorian) currently has tallied over 40 million views on YouTube.
Thrift store pros, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis talked about the fine art of thrift shopping, and how you can pop tags and stay fresh for only 99 cents.
“When I go into a thrift store, it is about going in and not having any expectations of what you might find,” said Macklemore. “If you go in and you are like, ‘I am going to find a couch,’ you are not going to find a couch. You gotta go in and be open to whatever is in front of you… It’s about having an awareness at the thrift shop.”
The rapper continued by explaining that those who are specifically on the hunt for a vintage Starter snapback, or pair of classic Jordans, will most likely be disappointed. “If you are going to a normal thrift shop, the chances of you finding that are very slim,” he said. “I have found them before, but I have never found one when I am trying to get [one].”
What have been some of the best finds Macklemore has landed?
“For me, some of my best finds have been searching in the XXL, XXXL woman’s section,” he explained. “Getting the fur jacket, getting the acid washed denim joint with leather tassels that a fat woman once wore… those are some of the best finds that I have gotten.”
Macklemore continued, “I have so many things I have acquired over the years. Yesterday, I got this Chanel windbreaker that is definitely a woman’s jacket. It’s big… and it fits.”
