Skylar Grey Talks Her Journey From Writer To Solo Artist
Skylar Grey sat down with Jenny Boom Boom for an exclusive interview backstage at the 55th annual Grammy Awards. The singer talked all about her journey from songwriter to solo artist, as well as her experiences working with Eminem.
Music has been part of Skylar’s life as long as she can remember. “I have been doing this since I was a little kid, I don’t know any other life besides music,” she said. “The first song I was really heard on was called ‘Where’d You Go’ and I went by the name Holly Brook.” The track was released as a single by Fort Minor, a side project of Linkin Park co-frontman Mike Shinoda. “It was actually a pretty big song,” Skylar recalled. “A lot of people still bring it up.”
After a short hiatus, Skylar hit it big– penning a five time Platinum single for two of the biggest names in the industry. “I came back writing ‘Love the Way You Lie’ by Eminem and Rihanna,” she explained. “So then everything snowballed from that.”
Since “Love the Way You Lie,” Skylar has worked in multiple projects with Eminem, including her major label debut, Don’t Look Down, set to be released this spring.
“He is executive producing my album, which is awesome because sometimes you just really need to bounce the music off somebody you really trust,” she said. “Em is incredible. So smart, so talented… really a once in a lifetime type of person to be able to work with. He has actually really helped me to accept who I am, and be myself.”
Skylar Grey’s latest single off Don’t Look Down, “C’mon Let Me Ride,” features Eminem and is available everywhere now!
