The entrepreneurial 50 Cent called the Hot 93.7 studio to talk about his latest business venture — boxing promotion. This Friday, 50’s SMS Promotions will present ESPN Friday Night Fights at Foxwoods MGM Grand Theater. SMS Promotions IBF Featherweight Champion, Billy “The Kid” Dib, will look to defend his title against the undefeated Evgeny Gradovich.
“I have [always] had a passion for boxing,” 50 told DJ Buck. “I have always enjoyed it as a kid because it was bigger. It was huge at that point… It was a big part of everything that was going on with me recreationally.”
Launched last November, 50′s SMS Promotions currently represents Yuriorkis Gamboa, Celestino Caballero, Andre Dirrell, and Billy Dib.“I got great fighters,” stated the media mogul, who acknowledged that he has his eye on returning the sport to its former glory– despite lagging popularity and tough competition from the UFC.
“What’s missing is that youthful audience and demographic that is completely aware of hip hop and music as far as pop culture is concerned,” he explained. “I think that there is a possibility for us to add different elements to these actual shows to make it [more] exciting.”
One of the ways the platinum selling artist has been able to amp up the excitement is by including a live performance at the fights. 50 performed his new single “My Life” from his upcoming album, Street King Immortal, at the Gamboa vs. Farenas fight last year… He told us we can expect a show this Friday as well.
“I am gonna perform on March 1st,” he stated.
From music, to movies, to books, energy drinks, and now boxing promotion, 50 has been successful in everything he has had his hand in– But the rapper noted that it is not the money, but ambition that drives him.
“I am just ambitious to begin with,” he said. “Provided the right opportunities, the limitations to how far you can go are not set. [You] can go anywhere… I am having fun.”
Tickets are still available for Friday night’s fight, and be sure to check out the after party hosted by 50 Cent at Club Sinergee in Meriden!
