Food insecurity is a major problem for many families in Greater Hartford. Over 137,000 people in Hartford and Tolland counties are at risk of not having enough food, including over 42,800 children.
With funding from Price Chopper Supermarkets, CBS Radio Hartford and CBS EcoMedia are partnering with Feeding America to support Greater Hartford’s regional food bank, Foodshare. Together with Johnson Brunetti, Brown Paindiris & Scott LLP, Jefferson Radiology and Kia of East Hartford we will help expand Foodshare’s Retail Food Rescue program, which helps to rescue and distribute nutritious food from local retailers that would otherwise go to waste. These rescued foods, which are no longer sellable, but still edible and nutritious, are brought directly to pantries, community kitchens and shelters.
In 2015, Foodshare rescued 14 million pounds of food, providing 11.5 million meals right here in Greater Hartford. By funding the expansion of the Retail Food Rescue Program, we hope to help Foodshare secure an additional 2 million pounds of retail donations in 2016, and continue to make hunger less of an issue for many households in Hartford.
Together we helped Foodshare rescue 960,000 pounds of food from Greater Hartford retailers, which will provide approximately 800,000 meals from October-December!
On September 23rd 2016 at Foodshare’s main facility in Bloomfield we helped pack over 9,826 pounds of bread to be distributed to pantries and shelters in the Greater Hartford Area!
