Lil Wayne Talks Young Money Sports Management Style

Wayne talks about his new game.

Lil Wayne created Young Money Sports to bring a hip-hop game sensibility to the world of athletics management — specifically, managing and promoting the personalities who join the Young Money family.

Wayne recently discussed the origins of the project and what he can offer athletes who sign with YM. One observation that attracted him to the project, he says, is the permeability and interplay between the realms of rap and hip-hop.

“[Rappers] all wish we were athletes. [And athletes] all wish they were rapper, he told Bleacher Report. “Honestly, it was something that almost felt like it was something I was supposed to do.”

The rapper saw enough similarities between how rappers and athletes promote themselves that he couldn’t resist trying his hand at a new game.

“First of all, I had to pay attention to what I was doing as an entrepreneur, as a businessman, and start to notice that you can do that for — not only my fellow artists or the people that’s under my label or whatever, musicians — I can do that for an athlete as well,” he said. “I can help you, for lack of a better term, shine off the field as well.”

But while he promises athletes under his management will have their moment in the sun, what they do on the field is up to them.

“A career is not promised,” he said, “but once you sign with me, my job is to make sure that you’re successful, so success is promised over here.”
