Lil Yachty Apologizes for Calling Notorious B.I.G. ‘Overrated’

Yachty finally bothered to listen to Biggie Smalls' catalog.

By Hayden Wright

Lil Yachty drew ire from the hip-hop community and social media at large when he dubbed the Notorious B.I.G. “overrated.” The remarks were seen as a rude dismissal of the hip-hop pioneer who helped pave the way for contemporary artists, including Lil Yachty himself.

Instead of diplomatically addressing the situation, Yachty posted a sorry-not-sorry screed to Twitter, doubling down on his comments and resisting calls to apologize. Weeks later, the rapper has changed his tune with a more thoughtful response (and apology) for what he said.

“Until about two weeks ago, I had never listened to a Biggie song,” Yachty said on Beats 1. “I’m not going to sit here and lie and say I just bump him. But I know for a fact he was spittin…. He snapped. I can’t lie. I was listening to it and I liked how he do the role play, like he’d do a story wrapping back and forth with himself and then there’d be a skit. It was dope.”

Somebody finally did the homework! Yachty added that his comments were made in haste.

“The only thing I kind of hate is that I kind of spoke so quick on him, saying I don’t know this I don’t know that before I gave him a chance and listened to him…. Before I said that I was in the blind. I feel like I owe an apology. I didn’t think before I spoke on that topic. I know now how important and just how serious it is to some people. I didn’t want people thinking that I was disrespecting him because it wasn’t a disrespect thing. That’s just my personal opinion. My dad did not play Biggie or Tupac so I had never heard it. And I just now, to this day, I feel like I was wrong for speaking about something like that without taking a second to listen.”

Eat your hip-hop vegetables, kids.
