Macklemore and Ryan Lewis rose to fame with their hit single “Thrift Shop,” and the accompanying music video helped solidify the ascent. Today, Macklemore shared that the video had officially surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube.
Macklemore posted a screenshot of the news on Instagram. “It started with an idea, a $5,000 budget and a community of folks that lent us there [sic] stores, clothes, cars, time, energy & love,” he wrote. “It now has a billion plays. 1,000,000,000. Who could have ever imagined…. thank you all.”
Thanks to the number of views, “Thrift Shop” officially became YouTube’s 40th most viewed video of all time. The Value Village, where Macklemore filmed most of the video, may be closed now, but its spirit lives on forever.
