Breaking Down ‘Born Sinner’ Track-By-Track, With J. Cole

One of the most highly anticipated albums of 2013, J. Cole’s Born Sinner will officially be available to the public on June 18^th. With all the buildup surrounding the album, it is surprising that Cole has been able to keep his sophomore set under wraps until now— Cole recently leaked his full project on his own terms, days after he posted the tracklist via Twitter. When the Hot Morning Crew met up with the Roc Nation MC backstage at Hot Jam 2013, he talked all about his LP, which is entirely self-produced, and he gave some insight on the inspiration behind a few of his favorite tracks:

“LAnd of the Snakes”

“The L and the A are capitalized in Land,” noted Cole. “It is roughly about this time I went to L.A. to record an album and I thought about moving out there. I considered it, but the other side was telling me, ‘Don’t do it, it’s dangerous.’ You can lose yourself in Los Angeles, it has a dangerous climate– loosely [the song] is about that. It’s just an ill song, [it has] a lot of good flows, and the beat is crazy.”

“She Know” (Feat. Amber Coffman)

“This song is all about temptation,” explained Cole. “A lot of the album is about temptation. [The track] is very big [and] the beat is crazy. It is the best beat on the album.”

“Let Nas Down”

“This is probably the most important song on the album. The concept goes back to when I put out this song called ‘Work Out,’ the biggest single so far in my career. Long story short, Nas was disappointed in [‘Work Out’], and he wasn’t approving of the song.”

Cole mentioned how big of an influence Nas was on him at a young age, and his disapproval of Cole’s work was the influence behind the new track.

“I explain it in the song. I got defensive. I am a huge Nas fan,I hung his raps all over my wall–there were only a few rappers that made it to my wall. There was Nas, Eminem, Canibus, and Tupac. Maybe sometimes I would put DMX, sometimes Jay-Z would get a verse, but those are the only artists that made it to my wall.”

Cole continued, “I felt like [Nas] didn’t know the reason why I put the song out. I wrote [“Let Nas Down”] a year and some change after it happened and I didn’t tell anybody that I wrote this song until now… It stuck with me for that long.”

“Crooked Smile” (Feat.TLC)

“This song is just an anthem,” said Cole.“[Born Sinner] works in halves. The first half is depressed and like hell. The second half is like heaven. ‘Crooked Smile’ is the theme song for the second half of the album. It is like making it out of the depression and celebrating it.”

Cole’s own crooked smile is the inspiration behind the title, and the rapper explained that the main message of the song is embracing your own imperfections.

“The song is bigger than just my thing, it’s about everybody’s thing. Society tries to tell you there’s something about you that makes you inferior to the images they’re trying to put out there. [‘Crooked Smile’] is really me embracing my [imperfections] and trying to get other people to embrace theirs.”

TLC have survived through their share of trials and tribulations in the past years,and Cole explained that this was one of the reasons why he recruited them as a feature on the track.

“I was [always] a big fan of them,” said Cole. “They represent the theme of the song. I felt like it was a perfect fit.”

Travis Scott brings us another creative look at a place called Quintana where he brings us for his new single anthem “Upper Echelon.” This seven minute video is so cinematic that you could call it a short film. He’s joined by T.I. and 2 Chainz for this song that appeared in his “Owl Pharaoah EP” which was released last month. Travis Scott is now another artist like Asap Rocky which took on the directing roll for his own video. Travis’s plot is about him escaping home and what he has to go threw to make it, while being surrounded by old woman drinking 40′s and midgets.

Chief Keef Pleads Guilty To Speeding And Placed On Probation

“I think you think you’re invincible, and you’re certainly not,” said Cook County Circuit Court Judge Earl Hoffenberg. “Violate (conditions of the plea agreement) and you’ll find out you’re not. … I sure hope I don’t see you again, because if I do you better be ready to go to jail.”

The judge gave Chief Keef a slap on the wrist, because he could have been sentenced to a year in prison and fined $2,500. Instead he was fined $531, put on probation for 18 months and 60 hours of community service.

Keef will also have to take random drug tests and take a driving class again. This might have to be a life change for the young Chicago rapper and even the judge warned him saying, “If I were you, I wouldn’t take this deal if you can’t follow these conditions.”

“I’m really not sympathetic to people who don’t listen to me,” the judge added. At this point it seems the law is ready to lock the young man up so hopefully he will change his ways and get the right support from his fans and friends.

Chris Brown ft. Aaliyah – “Don’t Think They Know”

Rumors had spread after the beef between Chris Brown and Drake that Chris was going to release a debut single with Aaliyah. The ironic thing about that is last year Drake released a single “Enough Said” featuring Aaliyah when he broke the news that he was working on the next Aaliyah album.

Took a while but Chris Brown did deliver, new record “Don’t Think They Know” dropped today featuring Aaliyah and also a video to go with it. The video shows visual’s showing violent culture and a spoof from the Boyz n the Hood movie. The video was shot in the Los Angeles and Compton and emphasized colors for gang affiliations and then at the end every wore the same color to represent unity. This song will be on Chris Brown’s forthcoming album X, due out July 16.

Lil Wayne Intentionally Dances On The American Flag In “God Bless Amerika” Video

Lil Wayne took the “Let me do something crazy to help sell my album” a little too far over the weekend. He was spotted shooting a video over the weekend to one of his songs “God Bless Amerika” off that “I Am Not A Human Being II.” During the shooting of the video Lil Wayne danced on top of an American Flag for a minute intentionally. Understanding that Lil Wayne has his views towards America saying in one lyric “the stars on the flag are never shinin’ it was still wrong and disrespectful.” If you know the flag of code, then you know that the flag is not supposed to touch the ground nor be stepped on. Their is no legal law that could charge you with anything but im thinking he will get more negative press then the positive he thinks he will receive for that stunt. What do you think?
